PRESIDENT SAMIA OPENS PUBLIC LAWYERS' MEETING, EMPHASIZES PROFESSIONALISM, INTEGRITY, AND PROTECTION OF NATIONAL RESOURCES
The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has urged Public Lawyers to continue working with integrity, professionalism, and high patriotism, while serving as protectors of national resources through the use of the pen and the law.
President Samia made these remarks while officially opening the Annual General Meeting of the Tanzania Public Bar Association (TPBA) on July 13, 2026, in Arusha City.
“I want to emphasize this: when a lawyer’s pen is used well, it can prevent losses before they occur, it can protect a contract before it becomes a burden to the government, and it can guide the Government in making the best decisions that are in the national interest,” said Dr. Samia.
Furthermore, Dr. Samia called upon Public Lawyers to remain guardians of national resources by providing legal advice that is accurate, patriotic, and honest, always putting the national interest first. She assured them that the Government will continue to support Public Lawyers by building their professional capacity and providing a conducive working environment.
In another development, the President commended the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) for the various steps it continues to take to strengthen contract vetting systems, legal translation regulation, legal aid, Legal Clinics, and the provision of legal education to citizens.
“I highly commend you for these steps to strengthen contract systems, legal translation regulation, legal aid, and legal clinics. These measures have, in one way or another, helped strengthen the implementation of development activities and the welfare of our citizens,” the President stated.
Similarly, Dr. Samia praised the efforts of the OAG in advancing legal aid services, including the ongoing translation of laws into Kiswahili, a process that is nearing completion.
“This step you have taken is crucial and commendable because when a citizen understands the law, they understand their rights, their responsibilities, the limits of their freedom, and the boundaries of Government authority—this is the true meaning of the rule of law,” noted the President.
Dr. Samia explained that to achieve the goals of the National Development Vision 2050, the country must have a legal framework that encourages citizens to participate in and contribute to a strong, competitive, inclusive economy driven by knowledge and innovation.
“The direction of this nation for the next 25 years is to see our legal and justice delivery systems inspire people to direct their efforts toward and contribute to a strong, competitive, inclusive, and knowledge-and-innovation-driven economy. This will only be possible if we have superior laws,” said Dr. Samia.
For his part, the Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Hon. Dr. Juma Zuberi Homera, explained that his Ministry continues to work in close collaboration with the Tanzania Public Bar Association through its patron, the Attorney General. As part of this support, the Ministry has provided the association with office space within the Ministry’s building located at Mtumba Government City in Dodoma.
Speaking at the event, the outgoing President of TPBA, Mr. Bavoo Junus, thanked the President of the United Republic of Tanzania and her Sixth Phase Government for enabling the association to execute its duties effectively. He noted that this support has allowed the association to grow, strengthen, and deliver impactful, productive, and efficient contributions to the duties of public lawyers.
Additionally, Mr. Bavoo stated that the association will continue to participate in legal aid outreach programs across various regions to ensure citizens receive education on various legal issues.
The TPBA Annual General Meeting, which was opened by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan on July 13, 2026, will, among other things, feature elections for various leadership positions within the association, scheduled to take place on July 14, 2026.
