OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO CONTINUE COLLABORATING WITH NEMC TO STRENGTHEN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Attorney General, Hon. Hamza S. Johari, has stated that the Office of the Attorney General will continue to strengthen and improve its cooperation with the National Environment Management Council (NEMC) to enhance the accurate interpretation of laws.

The Attorney General made these remarks while serving as the Guest of Honor at an Iftar event organized by NEMC on February 26, 2026, in Dar es Salaam.

"The Office of the Attorney General will continue to collaborate with you in strengthening the accurate interpretation of the law, as well as ensuring that legal actions are taken whenever necessary to protect the national interest," said the Attorney General.

Furthermore, Hon. Johari emphasized that environmental matters are not optional but are both a legal and moral obligation. He explained that the effective implementation of the Environmental Management Act and its regulations is vital in ensuring that economic development goes hand in hand with social well-being and the conservation of resources for future generations.

"In this regard, NEMC has a great responsibility to oversee the enforcement of these laws with professionalism, justice, and without bias," the Attorney General added.

He also commended NEMC for organizing the Iftar event, which brought together leaders, employees, and various stakeholders from the environmental sector. He noted that such events strengthen institutional relationships and build a renewed spirit of serving the nation with diligence and integrity.

On his part, the Vice Chairman of the NEMC Board of Directors, Mr. Alex Mgongolwa, stated that the Board will continue to supervise NEMC Management to ensure the institution fulfills its duties effectively, in accordance with the country's laws, regulations, and guidelines. Additionally, the board will continue to strengthen systems of good governance, transparency, and accountability to ensure the institution serves as a role model in the public sector.

The Director General of NEMC, Dr. Immaculate Sware, thanked the Attorney General for accepting the invitation to be the Guest of Honor. She noted that his presence demonstrates the Government's commitment to continue strengthening the principles of the rule of law in environmental management.

"We highly value the guidance and support we receive from the Office of the Attorney General in reinforcing the foundations of accountability and justice within the environmental sector," said Dr. Sware.
