The Deputy Minister for Minerals, Hon. Dr. Steven Kiruswa, led the Government team in a signing ceremony for a Joint Venture Agreement for helium mining between the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and Helium One Global Limited, through the joint venture company, Songwe Helium Limited.
The Deputy Attorney General, Hon. Samwel M. Maneno, participated in the signing ceremony held on May 2, 2026, in Songwe Region. Under this agreement, the Government will hold a 17% stake in the joint venture company, Songwe Helium Limited.
The signing of this contract is a direct result of the Government’s efforts to create a conducive environment for investment. Helium is a unique gas with no known substitute, and its use is strategic to modern life. It is essential for medical equipment such as MRI scanners, the production of electronics and digital technologies, the aerospace sector, defense, and scientific research.
This agreement marks the beginning of a historic journey for Tanzania, positioning the nation on the world map as a strategic producer and supplier of helium gas. The project covers an area of 480 square kilometers, primarily located in the Momba District of Songwe Region, with a smaller portion extending into Rukwa Region.
